How to Ease a Toothache?

In this article, we will talk about different ways to ease a toothache.  It is a common problem, which almost all of us have experienced at least once in our life. What we do not know is the prime reason behind this problem. Remember when your mother used to yell  you to brush your teeth. Well, she surely knew the effects of not brushing. Not maintaining good oral hygiene leads to gum disease and pain in the tooth. There are other causes as well which we have listed below. After causes, we have also penned down different remedies to ease a toothache.

Causes of a Toothache:

  • Infection in gums
  • Damage in filling
  • Lack of nutrition
  • Tooth decay
  • Acidic and hot food

Symptoms of a Toothache:

  • Swelling and inflammation around the tooth.
  • Sharp, throbbing and constant pain tooth.
  • A headache and fever.
  • Swelling in the gums.
  • Bad breath

Ways to Ease a Toothache:

1.) Myrrh to Ease a Toothache

Myrrh is a natural astringent which helps to get rid of the inflammation around the infected tooth. Moreover, it inhibits the growth of bacteria which leads to a toothache gum disease. Use tincture of myrrh to treat a toothache. In boiling water add a teaspoon of myrrh powder. Let it boil for a while and then remove it. Leave it to cool at room temperature and then use the solution to rinse off your mouth.

2.) Clove to Ease a Toothache

Clove is an ideal home remedy for a toothache. It has a compound known as Eugenol, which is the natural anesthetic. It numbs the nerves and treats the pain. However, do not apply clove oil directly on the infected tooth as it can be too strong for sensitive gum tissues. Instead, dip the cotton ball into it and place it over the affected tooth. Chewing clove is equally beneficial. Follow any of the above remedies regularly to get rid of a toothache.

3.) Salt Water to Ease a Toothache

Salt water acts as a natural painkiller. It will clean the debris and bacteria accumulated around the gums and also reduce swelling as well. Boil a cup of water and add a teaspoon of salt in it. Swish the solution around the teeth and gums for a few seconds and then do not swallow it rather spit it out. Repeat this remedy whenever you experience the oral problem.

4.) Hydrogen Peroxide to Ease a Toothache

Hydrogen Peroxide kills the bacteria which leads a toothache and other gum diseases. However make sure that you use a 3% of hydrogen peroxide solution. Swish it around gums and teeth for a couple of seconds and then spit it out. Then rinse your mouth with warm water.  This will not only inhibit the growth of bacteria, in fact, it will also help you to get rid of the bad breath which is one of the symptoms of a toothache.

5.) Ginger and Cayenne to Ease a Toothache

Both cayenne and ginger are wonderful remedies for a toothache. Mix equal amount of cayenne and ginger powder with a few drops of water to make a thick paste. Dip a cotton ball into the paste and place the cotton ball over the infected tooth. Leave it on overnight. The heat-packing spices will work as potent a painkiller.

6.) Peppermint to Ease a Toothache 

Another remedy for a toothache is peppermint. The herb has a numbing power. It blocks the passage of pain signals to the brain. A peppermint tea will ease your toothache. Boil a cup of water and add a teaspoon of dried peppermint and steep it for a while. Then leave it to cool at room temperature and use it for swishing. Swish it around your mouth and spit it out. You can also place warm peppermint tea bag on the infected tooth till the pain fades away.

7.) Ice Cube to Ease a Toothache

An ice cube can be an instant pain reliever. All you have to do is place an ice cube in a plastic bag and cover the plastic bag with the thin cloth and place the small bag over the infected tooth. The bag will work as the cold compress. Make sure you do not place ice cube directly on the tooth. You can place the ice cube on the cheeks adjacent to the infected teeth. Moreover, a gentle massage with ice cube will also do a work.

8.) Cucumber to Ease Pain

Yes, like other health problems the cool vegetable can counter a toothache as well. Since it has the cooling effect that’s why it numbs the nerves and helps you to ease the pain. Place a slice of cucumber over the infected tooth. Replace it after a few minutes. Repeat this till the pain subsides.

9.) Fluoride to Ease a Toothache

A major cause of a toothache is tooth decay. To get rid of the tooth decay apply fluoride on the infected tooth. Or you can also gently massage toothpaste which contains fluoride on your teeth. Use fluoride toothpaste to brush your teeth. Moreover, while brushing do not apply pressure on the teeth and gently brush your teeth.

10.) Garlic to Ease a Toothache

Garlic will also treat a toothache. It has medicinal properties and antibiotics. Crush a garlic and mix it with black salt or table salt. Apply this mixture on the teeth. You can also chew the cloves of garlic to treat the pain. Do this regularly to get rid of a toothache.

11.) Onions to Ease a Toothache

You can also use onion to cure a toothache. It has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that treat the pain. It inhibits the growth of the bacteria. Chew an onion or, if you do not like to chew it, just place a slice of onion on the affected tooth.

12.) Mint Leaves to Ease a Toothache

Last but not least mint leave to get rid of a toothache. Chew some mint leaves or rinse off with mint tea. In a cup of boiling water add mint leaves. Steep it for a while. Leave to cool at room temperature and use it to rinse or natural mouthwash.

Tips to Prevent Toothache:

  • Maintain oral hygiene.
  • Brush your teeth regularly, in fact, two times a day.
  • Do not forget to gargle and floss after the brushing the teeth.
  • Visit your dentist regularly.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Do not put pressure on your teeth.
  • A treat toothache as soon as possible.
